Working with wind as a material for creating, breaking and shaping line, this inflatable ‘drawing-in-space’ conjures new kinds of gestural movement, patterns and mark-making possibilities.
Connie Anthes makes objects and installations with unconventional materials and methods. Connie explores new ways of making images through process, failure and ‘material ruptures’.
Untitled (Doorway/Dance #1) was originally exhibited as part of the series He Blinked Back featuring kinetic experiments Connie calls ‘inflatable drawings’. Wind is the mark maker; creating, breaking and shaping line into dynamic, gestural movements. The canvas is the empty space. A new drawing-in-space is made every time the fan is switched on.
Connie has a Masters of Fine Art (Painting) from the National Art School, Sydney and a Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication, Honours First Class) from University of Technology, Sydney and Central St Martins, London. She has exhibited work in Australia, Germany and the USA and has been the recipient of numerous international artist grants and residencies. She was a 2009/10 director of Firstdraft Gallery, is currently on the board of Runway Experimental Art Journal and the MCA Artist’s Advisory Group.
